Corinium Radio is the second of a series of projects set up to offer communities in Gloucestershire a chance to explore what a radio station created by local people truly sounds like. It is about celebrating and sharing what is truly local, giving people a voice, as the waves of new community radio stations sweep across the UK.
It was commissioned by the County Arts Advisory Group made up of all the local authorities and Arts Council SW to promote the development of community media. The project was developed by Forest of Dean Radio, based on 11 years of community radio experience. On 1st January 2006 FoD Radio went on air with the first ever full time community radio licence in the UK. Corinium Radio broadcast for the first time on 5th and 6th May 2006.
Today, Corinium Radio is a ‘not-for-profit’ group made up of members of the local community who volunteer their time to provide something that is about the community of Cirencester. Our aim is to offer a variety of programmes to suit a variety of tastes but all with a local feel.
New people are always welcome to join the team – it’s great to hear new ideas and share the fun.
Corinium Radio meetings are open to all, although we do request under 13s be accompanied by an adult.
Structure
We have recently gone through a restructuring of our organisation. We felt that keeping a formal committee and meeting format was discouraging people from getting involved.
The new structure is divided into groups and each group represents a fact of what we do and how we operate. We hope that this new look will encourage new people to get involved in the organisation.
We have 4 different groups trying to cover all the things that need to be done to run successfully.
Admin: Responsible for ensuring the finances are correct and making license applications when necessary. For further information, e-mail admin@coriniumradio.co.uk. These meetings bring all the groups together in our core group format so if you would like to join us the you should come to one of these meetings in the first instance.
Programming: This group puts together the schedule for each broadcast and also makes suggestions for what programmes might be made. For more information contact Tim Craven or Liz Young at programming@coriniumradio.co.uk.
Technical: The technical group ensure that the studio is set up and ready to go, maintains the website Corinium Radio branded Facebook and Twitter accounts. The Technical Group also assist with recording and editing of both live and pre-recorded programmes. They will also soon be training people how things work. To contact the technical group e mail Fred Hart and Malcolm MacGregor on technical@coriniumradio.co.uk.
Publicity and Fundraising: The title says everything. We cannot run without either of these things so a very important group. The publicity half of this group maintains our links with the local press, including Cirencester Scene Magazine and Wilts & Glos Standard. (publicity@coriniumradio.co.uk)
The fundraising half of the group oversees the organization of sponsorship and keeps an eye on how much money we make at local events (fundraising@coriniumradio.co.uk).
Joining Us
If any of these groups interest you then you should come along to one of our core group meetings in the first instance.
